Molly de Aguiar Comments on Funding Practices that Harm Local Newsrooms

Nieman Lab published a two-part series about funding practices that overlook small, local newsrooms but favor national and global newsrooms and newsroom intermediaries. In part two, IPMF President Molly de Aguiar commented on philanthropic practices, such as risk mitigation and measuring impact, that prevent small newsrooms from receiving unrestricted funding.

“Philanthropy in general favors larger, more well-established nonprofits, which is as much about mitigating the ‘risk’ of their investment as it is about demanding impact through scale of people being served by the nonprofit,” said de Aguiar.
