Raishad Momar

Raishad Momar (they/them, he/him) is an Emmy award winning filmmaker, video journalist and visual artist based in Philadelphia. As a cinematographer and staff video producer for The Philadelphia Inquirer's video team, Raishad shoots and edits a variety of docu-style stories across the region - and has a heart for stories exploring culture, identity and legacy.

In Fall 2019, Raishad won two regional Emmy awards (Best Light Feature and Best Serious Feature) for the Inquirer as a part of its newly formed video team of only three dedicated videographers — marking the first time the paper ever received the honor. In 2020, Raishad won another Emmy for a short film about high school food insecurity. Raishad's film “Legendary: 30 Years of Philly Ballroom,” which they co-directed, filmed and edited, screened at the BlackStar Film Festival in August 2020 and won the festival's Shine Award - recognizing the best films from the Philadelphia area. Raishad's films have also screened at the San Francisco Doc Fest and QFlix, Philadelphia's premier LGBTQ film festival.

Raishad has an M.S. in Journalism from the Columbia School of Journalism and a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Southern California.

Description

The 2021 film grant will support "Spirit of 52nd," a hybrid/experimental moving portrait which incorporates non-fiction/verite documentary elements, archival scenes, and some minimally scripted/directed scenes. The film will treat 52nd Street—a once thriving Black business corridor in West Philly—as its main character, meandering between various stakeholders and memories, past and present, individual and collective.
